If you’re short on time, air dry your damp clothes just won’t cut it. However, that doesn’t mean your household budget has to suffer. The United States government offers discounts of up to $840 for an increasingly popular electrical device called a heat pump tumble dryer.

The scoop

When the United States Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 it essentially came into being a bank account of $8,000 for every American to achieve energy efficient, money saving upgrades through the Home Efficiency Rebates program. Meanwhile, the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates offer up to $14,000 in additional tax credits, and that’s the program that provides provisions for a heat pump tumble dryer.

The US Department of Energy estimates the general discounts on energy-efficient electrical appliances – including heat pump tumble dryers, smart home technologies, weatherproof propertiesand more – Americans will ultimately save up to $1 billion on their energy bills every year.

How it helps

According to EnergyStarHeat pump tumble dryers are not only kinder to your wallet and the environment, as they use almost 30% less energy compared to conventional dryers, but they are also kinder to your clothes – potentially making them last longer – as they require lower temperatures.

In addition, they are easy to install because they do not require ventilation. To remove moisture from clothes, heat pump clothes dryers heat the air in the closed system and reuse it after sending it through an evaporator, rather than losing that energy through a vent.

What everyone says

Reddits r/Devices was buzzing with praise from homeowners who installed electric heat pump clothes dryers, with one Redditor bold to declare“It’s the future,” in a message asking for a list of pros and cons of the devices.

“I’m happy with mine. Very energy efficient,” another said. “Make sure you clean all filters as stated in the manual.”

“Maintenance is very simple,” someone else wrote. “One suggestion is that even if the clothes feel damp at the end of the cycle, take them out one at a time and shake them out. There is residual moisture on the clothes and if you give them a shake they will dry immediately. “
